Start with the fold
Almost every way of wearing a square scarf begins the same way: fold it corner to corner into a triangle, then roll the long edge over on itself until you have a band. A flat band knots smaller and sits better than a bunched one.
How wide you make the band is the only real decision. Narrow reads sharp, wide reads soft.
The five
At the neck, knotted once at the side. Through the handle of a bag, tied in a bow with the ends left long. Around a ponytail, over the elastic. As a headscarf, folded into a triangle and tied at the nape. And around the waist, threaded through belt loops in place of a belt.
The same square does all five, which is why one good scarf outperforms three mediocre accessories.
Looking after it
Hand wash cold, never wring it, and hang it to dry away from direct sun. Sun is what fades a print, not washing.
If it creases, press it on low heat through a cotton cloth rather than directly. Silk scorches faster than you expect.
